Wrestling Splits with Hofstra and LIU on Long Island

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. – Harvard wrestling (3-9, 3-6 EIWA) comes out of a weekend trip to New York City with a pair of wins after Sunday afternoon's matches with Hofstra (10-5, 6-0 EIWA) and LIU (2-20, 0-8 EIWA). The Crimson fell to the Pride early day, 20-17, but rebounded and picked up a 33-14 win over the Sharks in the afternoon.


The Crimson began Sunday in Hempstead, N.Y. facing the Hofstra Pride. Starting off at 174 pounds, Harvard found its backs against the wall, trailing 14-0 early, but began to chip away at the deficit. No. 10 Yaraslau Slavikouski earned his ninth straight dual victory edging out a decision over Zachary Knighton-Ward, 3-2.

Following a loss at 125 pounds, the Crimson answered with back-to-back decision at 133 and 141 pounds. First-year Michael Jaffe knocked off Garrett Lambert via an 8-4 decision, before junior Lukus Striker earned the 5-1 decision over Vinny Vespa to pull the Crimson to within eight points.  

A decision Hofstra's Reece Heller at 149 pounds sealed the match for the Pride, but the Crimson made the final statement. Senior Hunter Ladnier earned his seventh dual victory of the season blanking Holden Heller, 6-0, before No. 16 Philip Conigliaro registered his first technical fall of the season, dominating Charlie Kane, 19-2.


In its second match of the day against LIU, Harvard set the tone, opening with a 13-0 lead behind a pair of decisions from Stricker and first-year Beau Bayless and a forfeit win for Jaffe.

At 157 pounds, Ladnier registered his second victory of the day and improved to 8-4 on the dual season with a pin of Kenny Cooper to increase the Crimson lead to 24-3. Conigliaro pushed Harvard's advantage to 27-3 following his second technical fall of the day, blanking Daniel Espineira, 16-0.

Mike Doggett earned his second win of the weekend with a 5-2 decision over Dan Shafran to move to 3-6 in duals. No. 10 Yaraslau Slavikouski closed out the match for the Crimson registered his first pin of the season against Maguire Horl at 2:52.
