Ski Team Finishes Ninth at Williams Carnival

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - In the fifth EISA ski weekend of the season Harvard finished ninth out of 12 participating schools at the Williams Carnival. The Crimson's women Alpine team produced an impressive sixth place finish in the giant slalom while the Nordic team once again led the way with a fifth place finish in the 5K classic event.

Warm temperatures made for great viewing and riding on both venues. Dartmouth and Vermont finished first and second while being separated by just two points. Meanwhile, Middlebury edged out New Hampshire for third place.

In the women's 5K freestyle, Audrey Mangan produced a 17th-place individual finish after qualifying in 35th place while Esther Kennedy narrowly edged out teammate Alena Tofte for 27th palce by just five tenths of a second. Trevor Petach led the men's 10K freestyle event with a 37th place finish.

Caroline McHugh had another big weekend as she paced the Crimson in the women's GS during an impressive set of runs that saw her climb from 54th position into 18th for her best runs of the season. Catherine Sheils also turned in a top 30 effort, holding off two others by just two tenths of a second for 28th place.

In the men's GS, Chris Kinner once again led the way for Harvard with a 29th place finish as he moved up eight positions during the race.

Staying on the alpine mountain, Sheils continued her theme of leading the Crimson in the slalom - this time with a 21st place finish - one ahead of last week's place and 15 positions faster than qualifying. Kinner was even better in advancing through the pack as he finished in 27th after wearing bib number 45.

In the women's 5K classic start, Mangan led a brilliant charge at the end to finish in 13th position - after starting in 58th with a time if 17:25.1. kennedy meanwhile, also turned in a top 20 performance in 17th place - up from 64th at the start. Petach once again led the men in the 10K event, finishing in 44th position.

Next week's event takes place at Middlebury's Rikert Touring center and Snowbowl Venues for the Eastern Championships.
