Harvard Men’s Hockey Pairs With One Summit For Children’s Skate

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Harvard men's hockey team joined forces with One Summit on Sunday, Jan. 24 as the players skated with children fighting cancer - kids currently on-treatment as well as off-treatment.

The players' goal in orchestrating a skate and meal with the kids was in line with One Summit's mission to "help children battling cancer build resilience through experiential learning and mentorship".

"With the support of ex-Navy Seal and founder of One Summit, Adam La Reau, we were able to plan an event that allowed us to share our love of being on the ice with the kids of One Summit," said co-captain Kyle Criscuolo. "It was inspiring to see such high spirits from the kids, despite each of them having to deal with the daily hurdles presented by their cancer. We look forward to staying connected with them going forward."

One Summit is a non-profit organization committed to helping children battling cancer build courage, self-confidence and the resilience needed to continue their fight. One Summit was founded by Adam La Reau in 2013. Adam's inspiration stemmed from his experiences as a Navy SEAL, coupled with his mother's fight against breast cancer.

"This is a mentorship program that is meant to build resiliency in these kids, so to get them out here to have experiences they have never had before - many of them have never skated before - is what it's about," said La Reau.

"Many of the kids had never ice skated before, but were eager to step on the ice with the Harvard Hockey team," continued Criscuolo. "Encouraging the kids on the ice in teaching them to skate was a thrill."

"It was refreshing to get on the ice with these courageous kids," said fellow co-captain Jimmy Vesey. "The event allowed us to take a step back from our busy schedules and remember how important it is to use our position in the community as Harvard Hockey players to give back. Everyone had a great day, and the impact that each kid made on us will stick with the team for some time."

Each kid left with a Harvard Hockey jersey to remember the event. The team will seek out future opportunities to continue the relationship with One Summit in hosting more events for the kids connected to the program.
